The Nativity
Attributed to the Master of the Aachen Madonna (German, active circa 1460-1480)
Ref. 472
Metalcut, 15th Century, a very good impression of this very rare print (Schreiber lists only four impressions of this print), slightly unevenly printed on the left edge, early stencil-colouring in green, yellow and red-brown, as in the British Museum impression, with borderlines added by hand in red and brown outside the printed black border
Subject: 5.6 x 4.3 cm, and approx. 4mm painted border
Provenance: P. & D. Colnaghi, London, 3 March 1976, Five Hundred Years of Fine Prints no. 2
Literature: Schreiber 2195A Schreiber links this print with a collection of forty metal-cuts of about 1470 sold in Munich in 1907, twenty-four of which (including the present work) he gives to the Master of the Aachen Madonna. He considers that the engraver may have worked in either Aachen or Cologne. He does not connect them, however with a group of six metal-cuts which were sold at Sotheby’s in 1955 (Schreiber 2184a, 2188g, 2195, 2210a, 2412m and 2510n) which bear a conspicuous stylistic and technical resemblance to the present print. These last Schreiber attributes to a Cologne workshop, with a possible date of ten years later
