Provenance: W. Drugulin; Fürst zu Lichtenstein; P. & D. Colnaghi, London, 3 March 1976, Five Hundred Years of Fine Prints no. 3 Van Meckenem was a goldsmith and engraver. By 1480 he had settled in Bocholt on the Northern Rhine in Germany, where he had a flourishing workshop reproducing the work of the Master ES, Schongauer and Dürer. The present engraving is based on a work by The Master of the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand. Van Meckenem’s oeuvre of about 500 engravings makes him the most prolific engraver of the fifteenth century.
