Provenance: Harrods Fine Art, 24 July 1973
Literature: Bartsch 292; cf. Hinterding 2008, no. 218; New Hollstein 62 Rembrandt’s father, Harmen Gerritsz. Van Rijn (c.1568-1630) was a miller from Leiden. It is not known for certain if this old man is his father, but Rembrandt was certainly known to have made portraits of him and this sitter appears in other works up to 1630 when his father died. Rembrandt began this work on a larger plate, possibly from life - etching just the head. In the second state he continued the portrait to half-length, before reducing the plate to this size
