Three Oriental Figures (Jacob and Laban?) 3
Rembrandt Harmensz. Van Rijn (1606-1669)
Ref. 479
ORIGINAL COPPER PLATE (The Schorr Collection Addendum 2022 page 37) Etching with drypoint, 1641, New Hollstein’s second (final) state
Plate: 14.3 x 11.3 cm.
Literature: Bartsch 118; cf. Hinterding 2008, no. 100; New Hollstein 190 The earliest cataloguers of this etching, Gersaint (G.114) and Bartsch simply described the subject as a genre scene, Three Oriental Figures. Several elements of the etching bear a resemblance to Rembrandt’s earlier etching Abraham Casting Out Hagar and Ishmael from 1637 - particularly the central figure wearing a turban which closely resembles his depiction of Abraham - and in 1859 Charles Blanc associated the subject with the confrontation between Laban and Jacob (Genesis 30:25-34) when Jacob wishes to leave Laban’s service; though there is not a clear link to this biblical story
